Doctor Reviews Dry Salt Therapy

emily salt

Dry Salt Therapy is gaining popularity as a result of the many benefits for the Respiratory System and our bodies largest organ, the Skin. We always ask for feedback from our guests who have experienced the therapy with us. The most common answers are an improved ease in breathing, a sense of relaxation and improved sleep. But what are the medical doctors saying about this alterative therapy? The following was written by Pulmonary Specialist Dr Daniel Layish MD.

The word Halotherapy comes from the Greek word “halos” meaning salt. While the potential benefits and therapeutic nature of salt has been known for centuries, it was not until the early 1800’s that the underground salt mines throughout Eastern Europe were noted to benefit various respiratory conditions. As the workers were mining the salt in these climate-enriched chambers, dry salt particles would be inhaled into the respiratory system. The dry salt was discovered to be super absorbent, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. Soon people with various conditions were spending time in these salt mines. In the mid-1900’s the Russians began working on a technology to replicate the dry salt particles in the air and developed the first halogenerator, a device that grinds pure sodium chloride into precise micron sized particles and disperses the dry salt into a climate controlled room or chamber. This was the start of modern Halotherapy, which has been utilized for several decades throughout Eastern Europe and has begun to expand into many other countries including the United States and Canada. The small particle size is felt to be important to allow penetration deep into the lungs, since larger particles will simply be deposited in the nose, throat or large airways. The air in a halotherapy chamber is also filtered to remove contaminants and the temperature and humidity are well controlled.

As a pulmonologist, I initially became familiar with halotherapy through my care of individuals with Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder characterized by dehydration of the respiratory epithelial surface, resulting in impaired mucociliary clearance. In this disorder, thick tenacious secretions obstruct the lower airway and sinuses and provide an environment for chronic infection. Nebulized hypertonic saline has been shown (in well done randomized clinical trials) to improve pulmonary function and respiratory symptoms as well as reduce pulmonary exacerbation rate in individuals with cystic fibrosis. This may be referred to as “wet” salt therapy as opposed to halotherapy which is “dry” salt therapy. Nebulized hypertonic saline can sometimes cause bronchospasm, and not all patients can tolerate this therapy even when premedicated with a bronchodilator. In cystic fibrosis, halotherapy has some theoretical advantages over nebulized hypertonic saline. The patient enters a room to receive the halotherapy typically in a 45-minute session. The prolonged duration of therapy appears to be associated with a much lower incidence of bronchospasm then is seen in the setting of nebulized hypertonic saline. In addition, in the halotherapy mode of administration the salt particles are delivered to both the sinuses and the lower respiratory tract. After seeing anecdotal benefit in our patients with cystic fibrosis, we performed a clinical study, which confirmed that this therapy was well tolerated and the patients derived symptomatic benefit in terms of their sinus complaints. Other studies are planned to study this therapy further in individuals with cystic fibrosis.

The fundamental defect in cystic fibrosis is related to chloride transport and therefore there is a strong rationale for halotherapy in this particular disease. Anecdotally, I have seen patients with other respiratory diseases derive significant benefit from Halotherapy including bronchiectasis, chronic bronchitis, chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis. The hypothesis is that Halotherapy may help with respiratory illnesses by liquefaction of airway secretions thereby enhancing expectoration. There seems to be very little risk to this therapy other than the financial and time investment. There is certainly a theoretical basis for the possible benefit of halotherapy, given the known antiinflammatory and anti-infective properties of salt. Currently, halotherapy is not covered by medical insurance companies. However, it is hoped that this may change as research is planned to try to prove the benefits that many patients have reported. Many halotherapy institutions offer a monthly pass that can make therapy more affordable than purchasing individual sessions. There is also an effort to develop systems that can deliver halotherapy in the home setting, avoiding the need to travel to a salt room. This is important since many people do not live close to a halotherapy center. It is worth noting that many patients have also noticed benefits in non-respiratory conditions, particularly dermatalogic conditions such as acne and psoriasis and research is planned in this area as well.

Reach out on Mother’s Day

Every year we set aside a special day to honor Motherhood. As we prepare to show appreciation for the  women in our lives, whether they are our biological moms, or women who hold a special place in your heart because of the motherly influence they have on us, I wanted to share some powerful thoughts written by Jessica Wolstenholm . Jessica Wolstenholm is an author and freelance writer who blogs about motherhood and life at graceformoms.com. I was touched by the variety of real situations that she defines in this complex relationship between mother and child. Take a moment to read and process her suggestions. There is a  message here for everyone:

Whether you walk extremely close or there’s a valley of difference between you, reach out to your mother this week.

Whether you see eye to eye or you can’t agree on much of anything, look your mother in the eyes if you can and tell her how special she is.

Whether she’s loved you well or lacked in affection, tell her how much you appreciate her and linger in love through words or embrace.

Whether she’s been your role model or she’s shown you what not to do, tell her how

much you’ve learned from her.

Whether she’s been a near perfect mother or a much less than perfect one, she’s still here and that fact alone leaves so much potential for you both.

Call her, embrace her, surround her with your love whether it comes easy or along with tons of baggage.

Reach out for reconciliation if you are estranged.

Reach out in compromise if you are indifferent.

Reach out with time and attention if you are busy.

Reach out with affection if you are reserved.

Reach out with generous love even if you already do it regularly.

Here is to finding a meaningful way to celebrate  Mother’s Day. We invite you to “reach out” by having a day together at Kaffee’s Garden Spa. A perfect way to say I love you, Mom!

Finding ME Time

image

Making more ME time. This is one of the goals we have for 2016. Taking time to take care of ourselves. One way is to spend some quite time and we can’t think of a better place to be quite and relax other than a bubble bath.

We are also trying to make sure that we are taking care of our bodies. Rather than using a store bought bubble bath, we have found that making our own ensures that we know what is coming in contact with our skin. We like the smell of honey and vanilla so we found this recipe that we will have to try.

image

½ cup light almond oil

¼ cup honey

½ cup mild liquid hand or body soap (Dr. Bronner’s is a suggestion)

1 egg white1

tablespoon vanilla extract

Keep the remaining in the refrigerator until your next soak.

Pedicures are a top pick for me time. KAFFEE’S GARDEN SPA has  added a new dimension to their pedicure experience with the choice of 3 new foot soaks from Farmhouse Fresh. There are two salt with botanical blends and a milk bath soak to choose from. They all have softening and moisturizing benefits but most importantly the aromas are so exquisite. Their pedicure room is an aromatic delight. Heavenly! We are booking an appointment today.

Me time. We need it. It keeps our motor running for this busy time of year. Make time for yourself, it’s important.

10 Reasons to have a Pink Himalayan Salt Lamp in Every Room

Himalayan Salt Lamps are so beautiful and bring something special to the room but you may not have realized the health benefits they provide!

Please come have a look at the selection of Himalayan Lamps and cooking plates and energy globes we have at the Spa.

10 Reasons to have a Pink Himalayan Salt Lamp in Every Room

Before we dive into the health benefits of using Himalayan pink salt lamps in your home, it may be helpful to first have a brief chemistry lesson:

All matter (the human body, air, water, etc) is made up of molecules which are made up of atoms which are made up of three types of particles: protons (positive charge), electrons (negative charge), and neutrons (no charge). Electrons orbit their molecules like planets revolve around a star. Occasionally an electron flies off and when it does, it leaves behind a positively-charged ion whose sole purpose in life becomes to fill the void left by its little lost electron. In other words: it wants to steal a replacement electron from another molecule. Due to differences in molecular structure (number of electrons in the outermost orbit, strength and structure of electron bonds, etc) some materials lose electrons much more easily than others.

With this basic understanding of the behavioWP_20150903_001rs of positive and negative ions fresh in your mind, let’s take a look at the top 10 benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps.

  1. Cleanse & Deodorize the Air

Probably the most well-known benefit – and why the majority of people use them – is due to their incredible power to remove dust, pollen, cigarette smoke, and other contaminants from the air. “But how do they do this,” you ask?  “It’s just a big chunk of salt with a light bulb inside, right?”

Well yes, but no.  There’s much more to it than that.

Himalayan pink salt lamps purify air through the power of hygroscopy, meaning that they attract water molecules from the surrounding environment then absorb those molecules – as well as any foreign particles they may be carrying – into the salt crystal. As the HPS lamp warms up from the heat produced by the light bulb inside, that same water then evaporates back into the air and the trapped particles of dust, pollen, smoke, etc remain locked in the salt.

  1. Reduce Allergy & Asthma Symptoms

Because HPS lamps remove microscopic particles of dust, pet dander, mold, mildew and the like from the surrounding air, placing a lamp or two in the rooms where you spend the most time can seriously cut back on allergy symptoms. Even people who suffer from asthma should notice a big difference after a week or two.

  1. Eases Coughing

When the Himalayan pink salt lamp heats up and begins its hydroscopic cycling of airborne particles, it also changes the charge of the molecules which are released. (Remember our chemistry lesson?) The majority of homes are filled with positively charged ions which aren’t particularly good for a person’s health. The positive ions are created by a number of things, but the primary source for most of us is from our electronics.

One of the health detriments of breathing lots of positive ions in the air is that the cilia (microscopic hairs) which line the trachea (aka: windpipe) become sluggish and don’t work as well to keep contaminants out of our lungs. As a Himalayan pink salt lamp absorbs water and particles from the air, it also takes positive ions with them. Then, when the heated salt releases cleansed water vapor back into the air, it also expels negative ions which have the opposite effect on our airways – to keep your lungs clear.

What all this means in a nut shell: Besides removing contaminants from the air, Himalayan pink salt lamps also help your body to filter air more efficiently so any foreign particles you do happen to breathe won’t make it into your lungs.

  1. Increase Energy Levels

Taking a drive through the countryside with the windows down, spending time at the beach, camping in the mountains, or simply taking a shower first thing in the morning are all things that many people find invigorating. It’s not a coincidence that these are all activities which expose us to increased concentrations of negative ions such as those generated by Himalayan salt lamps. The fact is, positive ions sap our bodies of energy. Unfortunately, it’s all too common for us to try to diagnose the problem as something else entirely.

If you constantly feel tired and don’t know why, try keeping a Himalayan salt lamp in the room or rooms where you spend the most time. After about a week, you should notice a difference.

  1. Neutralize Electromagnetic Radiation

Nowadays, most of us are living in a metaphorical ocean of electromagnetic (EM) radiation which flows from our electronics (ie: television, computer, cell phone, tablet, appliances, stereo, etc). While they may be invisible, the long-term effects of EM exposure can be quite serious. Constant exposure to EM radiation is known to increase stress levels, cause chronic fatigue, and decrease the body’s immune response, among other things.

As they emit negative ions into the air, Himalayan salt lamps work to neutralize electromagnetic radiation. Keep one next to the computer, television, and any other electrical devices which you use frequently to reduce the potential danger to you and your family.

  1. Better Sleep

Another side effect which results from over-exposure to positive ions in the air is that it robs you of quality sleep. This happens because those positively-charged particles can actually reduce blood and oxygen supply to the brain resulting in irregular sleep patterns. Himalayan pink salt lamps are natural negative ion generators, thus they can help to reverse this problem. Keep one or two around your bedroom to improve the air quality so you can get a better night’s sleep.

Remember, even if you’re like me and you can’t sleep unless the room is totally dark, you can always turn the lamp off at bedtime. Just leave it on for the rest of the day so it can do its work while you’re awake. People in humid climates should be aware that HPS lamps tend to weep when the salt becomes cool. You’ll definitely want to protect surfaces by placing a saucer underneath and be sure to follow the instructions for use and care which should be included with your lamp!

  1. Improve Mood & Concentration

Himalayan pink salt lamps are a great way to naturally enhance your mood or to help you relax and unwind at the end of the day. At the same time and on the opposite side of the coin, HPS lamps are great for improving concentration. Again, this is due to the effect of the negative ions on your body, improving blood and oxygen supply to the brain and other organs, as well as providing a boost of serotonin – the neurotransmitter which makes us (literally) feel happy.

  1. Treat Seasonal Affective Disorder

In addition to generating negative ions which improve mood and energy levels, the soft, natural light given off by a Himalayan pink salt lamp is close enough to the warm glow of sunshine that they can even be used to relieve the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder. This year when the days get shorter, fight back the lethargy by surrounding yourself with a few HPS lamps set on timers.

  1. Reduce Static Electricity in the Air

While not a “health benefit” at first glance, static is pesky stuff. It causes stress, embarrassment, and frustration. Static zaps you when you least expect it, as you’re reaching for a door handle, kissing your husband or wife before bed, or trying to pet your dog or cat. Static can give you a bad hair day, make it impossible to clean crumbs or coffee grounds off of the kitchen counter, and even cause you to accidentally go to work with a sock stuck to the back of your shirt…

(Okay, so that last one may have been a little over-the-top.) The point is, static electricity can be a huge pain and Himalayan pink salt lamps are a natural way to neutralize the airborne ionized particles which cause it)

  1. Environmentally-Friendly Light Source

Last, but not least: Himalayan pink salt lamps are environmentally friendly. While only an estimate, the reserves from which HPS is mined measure somewhere between 80 and 600 million tons and is projected to last for at least another 350 years at the current extraction rate. The base of an HPS lamp is generally carved from a sustainable wood such as neem. Some lamps use a low-wattage bulb which consumes very little energy while others are powered by a lit candle.

THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY PROCLAIMS NEXT BIG THING

The beauty industry finally catches up with what we have known for a long time…

According to New Beauty magazine the next big thing on the radar are products that contain a base of water. Products with a high water content are more compatible with a wider variety of skin types and are also a natural way for skin to remain hydrated. We could not agree more! Kaffee’s proprietary Aloe Hydrating Fluid is a water based, oil free serum that saturates the skin with hydrating ingredients and has developed  a “cult” following among it’s admirers for years.blue bottle

To meet the demand of women who want well-hydrated skin, now other beauty brands are creating products that focus on deep hydration by packing moisture into the dermis in the form of water-based products. They are formulated to infuse skin with hydration without disrupting the moisture barrier, This is exactly what our Hydrating Serum does with the help of its key ingredient, whole leaf aloe vera, which helps the penetration process of all the other ingredients. The other important component in our formula is  hyaluronic acid which acts like a sponge and holds the moisture in the skin’s deeper layers.

This trend extends beyond our borders and is seen in Korean beauty products also. Dewy, luminous skin is the ideal in South Korea, and staying hydrated with mists, powerful moisturizers and essences are how these women achieve that look.”  “In the Asian market women believe that water is a primary component of skin, so using it keeps skin looking young and fresh. Water-based products are the next big thing in the beauty world.”

“Water-based formulations layer well with other products and work toward the end goal of helping to keep skin better hydrated so that other products absorb properly and function more effectively.  Hydrating Fluid functions as  a  watery ‘booster essence’ also referred to as a ‘first essence’ to prep the skin, Anything that has a watery feel to it, like a toner, tonic, essence, mist, watery gel , falls under this umbrella. Products that are water-based or have a watery consistency should be applied to skin at the beginning of your skin-care regimen and apply a moisturizer or blended oil over top to seal in the water based product. The results are amazing for any skin condition and will change the look and feel rapidly. We are happy to have the beauty industry touting the use of water based products because we love Aloe Hydrating Fluid!!!Aloe

REDUCE STRESS WITH SPA VISITS & LIFESTYLE HABITS

Since 1992, The Health Resource Network has sponsored Stress Awareness Month in an effort to raise public awareness about how stress affects our lives and what we can do to address it. Long term, prolonged stress can lead to serious health issues. The American Heart Association states that many behaviors that accompany chronic stress elevate blood pressure. These behaviors are poor eating habits, inactivity, smoking, and high alcohol intake. At KAFFEE’S GARDEN SPA, our team of Spa Therapists are very aware that stress elevates the heart rate, increases muscular tension, breathing rate and feelings of anxiety. We are trained to provide therapies to help manage and correct the effects of stress. There are medical findings showing that massage promotes the relaxation response which is when the heart rate decelerates, breathing rate slows and muscles relax. Massage therapy is a proven, non-invasive way to physically reduce levels of stress hormones in the body while increasing levels of endorphins (the feel good hormone). A weekly massage can do wonders to help manage a stressful period. Every one of our other holistic spa therapies provides relaxation and stress reduction.

A session in the Salt Room to receive microscopic salt particles will clean your airways to improve lung function allowing deeper breathing and better sleep. Our Spa Facial is a relaxing and therapeutic, sensory delight that introduces you to the subtleties of Aromatherapy, which are essential oils that supports the nervous system, helping to manage stress. The facial also includes a hand and foot massage in addition to the shoulder, neck and face massage. Really just stepping in the door of the Spa, knowing you are about to be treated, is an immediate stress buster!

Your Spa visits can be supported by other easy and enjoyable lifestyle habits that we can be incorporate into your daily routines that lift our spirits and reduce our stress. Here are a few to try:

1. Breathe Deeply

Take a 5-minute break and focus on your breathing. Sit up straight, eyes closed, with a hand on your belly. Slowly inhale through your nose, feeling the breath start in your abdomen and work its way to the top of your head. Reverse the process as you exhale through your mouth.

Deep breathing counters the effects of stress by slowing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure.

2. Be Present

Slow down.

Take 5 minutes and focus on only one behavior with awareness. Notice how the air feels on your face when you’re walking and how your feet feel hitting the ground. Enjoy the texture and taste of each bite of food.

When you spend time in the moment and focus on your senses, you should feel less tense..

3. Tune In to Your Body

Mentally scan your body to get a sense of how stress affects it each day. Lie on your back, or sit with your feet on the floor. Start at your toes and work your way up to your scalp, noticing how your body feels

Simply be aware of places you feel tight or loose without trying to change anything. For 1 to 2 minutes, imagine each deep breath flowing to that body part. Repeat this process as you move your focus up your body, paying close attention to sensations you feel in each body part.

4. Meditate

A few minutes of practice per day can help ease anxiety. It is generally accepted that daily meditation can alter the brain’s neural pathways, making you be more resilient to stress.

It’s simple. Sit up straight with both feet on the floor. Close your eyes.. Focus your attention on reciting – out loud or silently – a positive mantra such as “I feel at peace” or “I love myself.” Place one hand on your belly to sync the mantra with your breaths. Let any distracting thoughts float by like clouds.

5. Decompress

Place a warm heat wrap around your neck and shoulders for 10 minutes. Close your eyes and relax your face, neck, upper chest, and back muscles. Take a warm bath with salts and essential oils that support the nervous system, like the ever popular Lavender.

6. Laugh Out Loud

A good belly laugh doesn’t just lighten the load mentally. It lowers cortisol, your body’s stress hormone, and boosts brain chemicals called endorphins, which help your mood. Lighten up by tuning in to your favorite sitcom or video, reading the comics, or chatting with someone who makes you smile. Don’t you always feel better when you talk to someone you love?

7. Crank Up the Tunes

Research shows that listening to soothing music can lower blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety. Create a playlist of songs or nature sounds (the ocean, a bubbling brook, birds chirping), and allow your mind to focus on the different melodies, instruments, or singers in the piece. Also singing along to your favorite songs will give you a lift in the shower or where ever!

8. Get Moving

You don’t have to run in order to get a runner’s high. All forms of exercise, including yoga and walking, can ease depression and anxiety by helping the brain release feel-good chemicals and by giving your body a chance to practice dealing with stress. You can go for a quick walk around the block, take the stairs up and down a few flights, or do some stretching exercise like head rolls and shoulder shrugs.

9. Be Grateful

Keep a gratitude journal or several (one by your bed, one in your purse, and one at work) to help you remember all the things that are good in your life.

10. Reach Out

Your social network is one of your best tools for handling stress. Talk to others – preferably face to face, or at least on the phone. Share what’s going on. You can get a fresh perspective while keeping your connection strong. The relationship between Client and Spa Therapist is a perfect example of a supportive connection.

We hope you have found this information helpful and that by making frequent visits to the Spa and practicing a few of the tips you found here, you will feel happier and healthier with minimal stress.

To celebrate Stress Awareness Month we are offering you a specially priced package, The Garden Salt Kur for $135.00 (regularly $160.00) only during the month of April. Visit our website to see the details of this relaxing package KaffeesGardenSpa.com or call us at 561-833-4483.
